by Cynthia Tisue, Covedale Teacher
Three teams of Covedale School's third-graders created costumes entirely from recycled materials for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-sponsored costume contest held during the city's 40th Annual Earth Day Celebration. First-place winners Ryan D. and Eli O. created a Recycled Robot using 31 plastic water bottles, 63 aluminum cans and a control panel from a broken copy machine. Alex B., Taylor S., Alyssa Z. and Kalyn D. designed the Recycling Fairy complete with plastic bows, bottle cap jewelry and crown, and re-purposed flip flops. The Recycled Cavalier was designed and built by Cameron D., Darin C. and Caleb M. This sailboat has a working steering wheel mounted on a plastic bottle and Styrofoam portholes.
