Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth’s Family to Teach CPS Students about the Civil Rights Movement


Students in Freedom Schools hosted by Cincinnati Public Schools will visit Greater New Light Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, to meet with the family of the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, and learn more about his life, beliefs and involvmenet in the Civil Rights Movement. The students currently are reading the book, Black and White: The Confrontation between Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene 'Bull' Connor by Larry Dane Brimner.

CPS has partnered with the Children's Defense Fund to operate two of its Summer Bridge Programs as Freedom Schools, a summer enrichment program that helps students fall in love with reading, while increasing their self-esteem and generating a more positive attitude toward learning. The program operates at Woodward Career Technical High School and Aiken High School – New Tech, and is designed to help introduce incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students to high school.

Greater New Light Baptist Church is located at 710 N. Fred Shuttlesworth Circle, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45229. The students will be there from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
