Petting a young shark from the Newport Aquarium, submerging Pop Rocks in a variety of liquids to observe how the candy crackles and experimenting with Alka-Seltzer rockets were some of the various activities meant to serve as a preview of Bond Hill Academy’s new curriculum at its back-to-school event on Aug. 8, 2017.
Bond Hill Academy is one of nine schools launching a specialized program for the 2017-2018 school year through Cincinnati Public Schools’ (CPS) Vision 2020: My Tomorrow program. Bond Hill Academy, closely collaborating with students, parents, community members and partners, chose Math & Science Discovery as its specialized program for grades 3-6.
“Careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are in high demand,” said Sharon Johnson, Principal of Bond Hill Academy. “We want to be a destination school that is known for helping students understand real-world scenarios in math and science and strengthen their skills to compete in a global market.”
Guests helping with classroom activities at the back-to-school event included Cincinnati Museum Center, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden and the WAVE Foundation at Newport Aquarium. Additional community partners such as GE Aviation, Mercy Health, Messer Construction, the Cincinnati Links and the Cincinnati Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi will offer mentorship and tutoring support throughout the school year.
