Ethel Taylor Academy kicked off its upcoming school year with community partners, parents, teachers and, of course, its students on Aug. 9, 2017, with an ice cream social.

“Today, we’re celebrating our community,” said Sherwin Ealy, principal at Ethel Taylor Academy. “We’re having a traditional ice cream social, but we’re also having a ribbon-cutting ceremony to say ‘Hey, this is a new school because this is a concept we haven’t been exposed to before … It’s a new beginning for everything we do.’”

Ethel Taylor Academy is one of nine schools launching a specialized program for the 2017-2018 school year through Cincinnati Public Schools’ (CPS) Vision 2020: My Tomorrow program. Students, parents and community members collaborated to determine New Tech as the school’s specialized program of choice, creating an opportunity to experience learning that will build their problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity skills.

The project-based learning opportunities also will help students connect what they learn in the classroom to how it applies in the world. Plus, students will have access to cutting-edge technology and applications.

“This is a new era for learning, for our school and for the community,” said Ealy. “[Our students] are going to experience learning through practical applications. Their learning is going to be deeper and more involved. They will develop skills they can enhance and enhance their whole lives.”

Students gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy ice cream with all the fixings, including whipped cream, chocolate and caramel sauces, and, obviously, sprinkles. Community partners, such as United Way of Greater Cincinnati, also were on hand to greet parents and welcome students back to school.

“The students will see things in a bigger picture,” said Ealy. “[Their] exposure to new things will lead to new pathways of learning that can be applied in different arenas.”
