The Rockdale Academy Choir, accompanied by local R&B band Deuces Musik, had the audience on their feet clapping and dancing during the 45th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Ceremony at the University of Cincinnati Kresge Auditorium.
Emcee Honorable Fanon A. Rucker, Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge, welcomed guests to the special event honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
After the opening remarks by the emcee, Judge Fanon Rucker, the Rockdale Academy Choir of eight members took the stage.
“We were honored to be a part of the celebration,” said Principal Belinda Tubbs-Wallace. “These students showed up even though it was a snow day and sang with joy and pride.”
When the choir finished, they had the opportunity to watch Kenneth Davis Jr., MD, F.A.C.S. be presented with the Humanitarian Award for outstanding service to the hospital. Following Davis was keynote speaker Verna Williams, Interim Dean and Nippert Professor of Law, who spoke on the impact of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in the past and today.
“It was exciting for the students to learn more about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Principal Wallace. “It’s important for them to see that his work is still relevant today. It also fits in well with our Vision 2020 program, Global Conservation, which develops students into globally minded advocates and leaders.”
The event wrapped up with another powerful performance by the choir and the opportunity for students to mingle with the event guests and honorees.
