“Peace in Avondale! Peace in Avondale!”
Students and Avondale community members were electric with anticipation outside Rockdale Academy on the last day of school. In just a few minutes, the City of Cincinnati was going to reveal a new billboard featuring student artwork that would stand at the corner of Vine Street and Forest Avenue.
The new billboard was part of a community contest. Students from Rockdale Academy, Phoenix Elementary School and Avondale Elementary School submitted artwork featuring a positive message for consideration. The winning artwork was contributed by Rockdale students Ebrian White McCree (grade six), Musa Mitchell (grade three) and Le Xuan Ye (grade three).
As the winning school, Rockdale students got a sneak peek of the billboard, courtesy of the City of Cincinnati and LAMAR. The winning artists received special gift bags from the Cincinnati Reds, and all students received a button with the winning artwork on it. James Neville, the art teacher at the school, was recognized for his involvement in helping the students create the winning artwork.
“What a special way to end our school year,” said principal Belinda Tubbs-Wallace in her remarks thanking community leaders and volunteers who made the event possible.
After the unveiling, students enjoyed an outdoor carnival with games, bounce houses, obstacle courses and UDF ice cream.
