Nine CPS Graduates Presented with Superintendent’s Housing Award

Nine CPS graduates from the Class of 2019 are the recipients of the Superintendent’s Housing Award, a $600 stipend for dorm room items, computers and books, expenses not covered by a college scholarship.

The effort represents a personal commitment of Superintendent Laura Mitchell to ensure that CPS students are supported as they transition to higher education.

“We are focused on increasing the number of students who are academically prepared for their college career, but they also need financial support beyond tuition scholarships,” Superintendent Mitchell said. “The housing award fund was designed to ease the transition to life on a college campus, including the technology and other supplies they may need to be successful as they start their collegiate career.”

Last year, three Housing Awards were presented to qualified CPS graduates.

This year, Originalitees, a Cincinnati-based clothing company, joined the effort by creating specialized “Product of Cincinnati Public Schools” shirts. The company has donated $5 from the sale of each of shirt to the Housing Award Fund. Two individual generous sponsors also contributed to the fund, allowing CPS to award six more awards for a total of nine this year.

To be considered for the award, students were required to submit an essay, letter of recommendation and complete an application about their high school experience, according to Kayla Ritter Rickels, college manager. Students must also reside on campus. Activities Beyond the Classroom serves as the fiscal agent for managing the award.
